Learning The Japanese Language

It’s not that difficult to start speaking Japanese fast, I took an online Japanese language course and started speaking the language with my Japanese friends pretty fast.

In Japanese if you wanted to say “what color is your car?” you would say “anata no kuruma wa nani iro desu ka”

Ok, so the word ‘anata’ means you, or in this sentence means ‘your’. Next we have the word ‘no’ which is what is called a possessive article and indicate who’s car in this sentence that we are talking about.

Now we have the word for Car which is ‘Kuruma’, and is followed by the particle ‘wa’ which is showing us that ‘car’ is the subject of the sentence.

Then comes the word for ‘what’ which is ‘nani’ which is then followed by the word for colour ‘iro’. Finally we finish with the verb ‘desu’ which means ‘is’ and the particle ‘ka’ which makes the sentence a questions.

Once someone has asked you that question you can reply telling them the colour of your of you car.

For this example we are going to use a red car. To say ‘my car is red’ in Japanese you would say “Watashi no kuruma wa aka desu”

Here we have the word “watashi” which means ‘I’ or in this case becomes ‘My’ and then the rest of the sentence is described already. Also remember from the video the word for red is ‘aka’.

A really important thing for you to note is that the words I have just given you are the ones you would use when refering to your own family, such ‘my brother’ is ‘Kyoodai’ but the Japanese are very polite and use mor formal and respectful words when they are talking about someone else’s brother or family members. Therefore the word for somebody else’s brother would be: “gokyoodai” meaning “your brother”.

Not all words ad ‘Go’ some add ‘San’ on the end, for example ‘my son’ is ‘Musuko’ but if I am talking about someone else’s son I say ‘Musuko san’

Now I wil show you how to put some of these words into a real sentence by showing you how to ask questions:

“Do you have a brother?”

“Go Kyoodai ga imasu ka”

You can see the word “go kyoodai” and the other words are the verb to have “imasu” and then two particles “ga” and “ka”, which for the sake of time wont discuss in this article.

I have put together this lesson on Japanese weather and colours and have listed some words for you to learn below.

Kin iro = Gold

Kurai Iro = Dark Colour

Kuro = Black

Rairakku Iro = Lilac

Gin Iro = Silver

Ao = Blue

Murasaki = Purple

Akarui Iro = Light colour

Chairo Iro = Brown

Shiro Kuro = Black and White

Mizu Iro = Light Blue

The next thing that is important to learn is how to use these words in a sentence, so lets take a quick look at how we could do that shall we:

First we will learn the phrase: “My Car is Green”

In Japanese this is “Watashi no Kuruma wa midori desu”

In this sentence the word ‘watashi’ is ‘my’ and the word ‘kuruma’ is ‘car’ and we just learned the word for ‘green’ which is ‘midori’.

The other smaller words we have are called particles and are used to indicate what the subject and where the possession is.

You may also want to learn how to use the word for colour “iro” in a question to. To do this you would say: “Anata no kuruma wa nani iro desu ka”

As you can see the sentence is similar but we have the word ‘anata’ which means ‘your’ and the word ‘nani’ which means ‘what’ and then the the word or particle ‘ka’ which turns the sentence into a question.
